Letter from the Editor

Dear reader,

This issue of Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics features two research articles on HPV vaccines. One investigates a link between immunization and infection in young women (Guo, p 2337), and the other discusses the impact of vitamin D on antibody production after vaccination (Zimmerman, p 2345).

We are happy to introduce four articles on Influenza. A review on protection offered by universal pediatric vaccination (Principi, p 2350), two clinical trials investigating the immune response induced by two doses of an AS03-adjuvanted A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccine (Garcia-Sicilia, p 2359), a study of immunogenicity and safety of inactivated trivalent vaccine (Roggelin, p 2370), and an analysis of public awareness and preference for pandemic influenza vaccination in India (Sundaram, p 2376).

Two Public Health papers deal with optimal vaccination program for healthy adults in China (Yao, p 2389) and the use of mobile applications in vaccinology (Wilson, p 2395).

We present eight articles in the Licensed Vaccines section: an analysis of enterovirus 71-associated disease burden in rural China (Gan, p 2400), a preclinical study of the ability of EV71 VLP vaccine to protect from a lethal challenge (Sun, p 2406), a report on the development of a nano-based Human EV71 mucosal vaccine (Saeed, p 2414), immunogenicity and safety study of PPV23 in healthy Chinese subjects aged >2 years (Kong, p 2425), an analysis of the sero-epidemiology of diphtheria and pertussis in Beijing (Li, p 2434), clinical study of a tetanus-diphtheria toxoid vaccine in healthy adults (Hong, p 2440), a report showing the importance of optimization of in vivo assays for the evaluation of mumps vaccine strain immunogenicity (Halassy, p 2446), and a commentary on the recommended vaccines for international travelers to India (Verma, p 2455).

Three articles in the Immunotherapy section include a review on T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain (Tim) proteins as targets in cancer therapy (Cheng, p 2458), a commentary on small molecule immunomodulators with anti-tumor potential (Murphy, p 2463), and a clinical study of the PSA-TRICOM vaccine administered with docetaxel and its effect on castrate-resistant metastatic prostate cancer (McNeel, p 2469).

Two research articles on Rotavirus report on the reduction of hospitalization of children after the introduction of universal immunization in Israel (Muhsen, p 2475) and preclinical immunogenicity of a recombinant subunit vaccine candidate (Wen, p 2483). We also introduce an analysis of Hepatitis B DNA levels in liver transplant recipients who were vaccinated against HBV reinfection (Duan, p 2490).

We conclude this issue with three commentaries on Novel Vaccines, namely, Acinetobacter vaccines—advances and challenges (Chen, p 2495), nanoparticle vaccines for listeriosis (Calderon-Gonzalez, p 2501), and schistosome vaccines in development (Ricciardi, p 2504).
