Letter from the editor

Dear reader,

This issue of Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics starts with a Licensed Vaccines section, in which you will find an analysis of the effect that combination vaccines have on completion and compliance of pediatric vaccination (Kurosky, p 2494), a review of interventions to promote pediatric vaccination (Frew, p 2503), a trial of a smartphone app to increase parental knowledge of the MMR vaccine (Fadda, p 2512), a review of safety testing of acellular pertussis vaccine (Hoonakker, p 2522), a report on the partnership of four Italian organizations in providing guidance for vaccinations (Bonanni, p 2530), a Phase 4 safety trial of inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine in Indian children (Sharma, p 2538), immunogenicity study of an oral poliovirus vaccine in Zimbabwean infants (Church, p 2543), and the characterization of the protein composition of the VA-MENGOC-BC meningococcal vaccine (Masforrol, p 2548).

Three articles on Immunotherapy include reviews on combination cancer vaccines (Gatti-Mays, p 2561) and immune tumor infiltration after immunotherapy of glioblastoma multiforme (Sokratous, p), and an analysis of immunotherapy-related patents in the US in the past decade (Pan, p 2583).

Six articles on Novel Vaccines present a preclinical trial of soluble and VLP fusion protein RSV vaccines (Lee, p 2594), a study of herpes zoster impact on diabetes patients (Muñoz-Quiles, p 2606), an introduction of novel nanoparticle dengue vaccine (Huang, p 2612), and three commentaries on DNA- and RNA-based RSV vaccines (Smith, p 2626), methods for ascertaining norovirus disease burden (Allen, p 2630), and the development of Staphylococcus aureus vaccines (Chang, p 2636).

The Acceptance section consists of three research articles on improved parental attitudes towards pediatric vaccination due to education during the perinatal period (Saitoh, p 2638), attitudes and practices among family medicine providers in the US (Bonville, p 2645), and knowledge and attitudes among Polish university students (Zarobkiewicz, p 2653).

Next, three research articles on Influenza report on antibody responses to vaccination of the elderly (Camilloni, p 2659), severe respiratory illness during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic (Potter, p 2669), and immunogenicity and safety of the inactivated split-virion trivalent vaccine Vaxigrip (Latreille-Barbier, p 2674).

The Technology section presents a review of extracellular vesicles for vaccine delivery (Liu, p 2678), and a report on aluminum hydroxide gels for increased immunogenicity (Xu, p 2688).

Two articles on Hepatitis present a systematic review of hepatitis B vaccination in diabetes patients (Younossi, p 2695), and a 7-year follow-up of the immunogenicity of inactivated hepatitis A vaccine (Espul, p 2707).

We are happy to introduce two HPV-related articles: an assessment of racial and gender disparities in knowledge and awareness of the HPV vaccine (Adjei Boakye, p 2713), and a commentary on vaccination in low- and middle-income countries (Jindal, p 2723).

Finally, we present a report on broadly neutralizing antibody fragments for the control of HIV (Lloyd, p 2726), a report on serum antibody activity after Passive Immunization with diphtheria anti-toxin (Smith, p 2738), and a systematic review of the etiology of community-acquired Pneumonia in Chinese infants aged <5 years (Ning, p 2742).

Our monthly News, Policy and Profiles (NP&P) track offers a selection of the latest news in the field of vaccines and immunotherapeutics. In this section we also regularly publish opinion pieces on timely, interesting and controversial topics related to vaccines and immunotherapeutics, profiles of companies and organizations, as well as portraits of distinguished scientists in our field. Please contact Acquisitions Editor Adam Weiss ( [email protected]) with your ideas for commentaries, opinion pieces, profiles and portraits. Your suggestions for and contributions to our N&P&P track are always welcome!
