Letter from the Editor

Dear reader,

This issue of Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics starts with a Portrait of Dr. Margaret Liu of ProTherImmune, Past President of the International Society for Vaccines (Liu, p 1016).

We present seven articles on Influenza: a review on the use of cell-mediated immunity for vaccine evaluation (Gianchecchi, p 1021), a report on vaccine-associated reduction of disease symptoms in children despite prevalence of mismatched strains in the 2014-5 season (Duan, p 1031), a systematic review of the use of the adjuvanted vaccine in older adults (Loperto, p 1035), an observational study of vaccination surveillance with an adverse events reporting card (de Lusignan, p 1048), analysis of a vaccination campaign’s impact on acceptance among hospital workers (Oguz, p 1060), a Phase 4 trial of the vaccine Shz-IIV3 (Hu, p 1066), and a survey of vaccine knowledge among pregnant women in Greece (Maltezou, p 1070).

The Acceptance section offers five research articles on the Italian experience for vaccine promotion (Ravetto, p 1075), factors affecting parental decisions about Tdap vaccination (Ledent, p 1080), screening vaccine-hesitant parents in China (Hu, p 1092), vaccine knowledge and practice among patients with rheumatic diseases (Jiang, p 1100), and a Spanish version of the survey on parental attitudes about childhood vaccines (Cunningham, p 1106).

Four Immunotherapy articles include a review of targeting the PD-1 pathway in cancer immunotherapy (Jiang, p 1111), a case report on intravenous immunoglobulin therapy of immunoglobulin kappa light-chain deficiency (Stanciu, p 1123), a commentary on the use of CRISPR editing for CAR-T cell therapy (McKee, p 1126), and a book review of DNA Tumour Viruses: Virology, Pathogenesis and Vaccines (Venuti, p 1133).

The Licensed Vaccines section features six research articles investigating the cost-effectiveness of serological screening prior to mumps vaccination of healthcare workers (Coppeta, p 1135), immunogenicity and safety of a new MMR vaccine (Nakayama, p 1139), safety of the DTaP-IPV vaccine in Korean children (Lee, p 1145), immunogenicity of inactivated versus oral poliovirus vaccines in Japan (Hotta, p 1154), the effect of maternal antibody on the immunogenicity of inactivated poliovirus vaccine in infants (Tang, p 1160), and immunogenicity of genetically versus chemically detoxified pertussis toxin (Surendran, p 1167).

Two articles on Hepatitis introduce a comparison of antibody persistence following 2- and 3-dose vaccination regimens (Lu, p 1171), and an effectiveness study of vaccination in patients on immunomodulatory drugs (Haykir Solay, p 1177).

Finally, we are happy to present a Novel Vaccines study on the effectiveness of enterovirus A71 vaccine in China (Wang, p 1183), a Public Health article examining rural-urban vaccination disparities in sub-Saharan Africa (Adamu, p 1191), and a Letter to the Editor on psychogenic illness following HPV vaccination (Idrovo, p 1199) with a Response Letter (Simas, p 1201).

Our monthly News, Policy and Profiles (NP&P) track offers a selection of the latest news in the field of vaccines and immunotherapeutics. In this section we also regularly publish opinion pieces on timely, interesting and controversial topics related to vaccines and immunotherapeutics, profiles of companies and organizations, as well as portraits of distinguished scientists in our field.
