Alternative Models of Development: The Sarvodaya Experience in Sri Lanka

Pages 76-90 | Published online: 25 Apr 2012

Abstract

This paper explores an experiment in social development by a non-governmental organisation in Sri Lanka. It examines the theoretical and operational difficulties encountered by a movement built on the Gandhian values of non-violence and spiritual development struggling its way through a capitalist economy. The broader value dilemmas inherent in this model of social development are identified and discussed.
