The View From Below: The Experience of Psychiatric Service Consumers in China

Abstract

This article is based on 18 interviews conducted with patients and relatives in the outpatients' department of Shashi psychiatric hospital in Hubei, China. The purpose of the interviews was to explore the pathways to care taken by relatives, the explanatory models used by them to account for the mental illness of their relative and their experience of the psychiatric services that were offered to them.
