Abstract
This review article aims to critically summarise David Cox's (1996) book, Understanding Australian Settlement Services and to point out how the settlement services have evolved over a period of fifty years. The interaction between immigration pressures and movements and different government's policies and programmes have influenced the development of settlement services in Australia. A clear and an objective understanding of the development of these services will facilitate the peaceful coexistence of a multicultural society. This book undoubtedly serves that purpose.
