Abstract
The recent SARS epidemic presented lessons on handling the dangers as well as learning opportunities associated with crisis, for the various communities, nations and the world. This article focuses on crisis theory and its application for the management of SARS in the Singapore context. Key concepts and approaches for crisis intervention dealt with are: 1. dealing with feelings and drama associated with crisis; 2. assessing danger and threats within a short time; 3. need for strategic planning and reorganisation of the crisis situation; 4. mobilising of resources to meet the challenge; 5. establishing communication channels and education; and 6. restoring a new level of equilibrium. This article also discusses, with examples arising from the SARS outbreak, the principles and issues of crisis management.
