Development of a Research Proposal to Explore Needs and Service Utilization among the Conjugally Bereaved in Singapore Lessons Learnt from a Pilot Study

Abstract

Spousal loss brings with it multiple stressors that will create a set of needs to challenge the coping ability of bereaved spouses. One way to cope with the needs is to utilize professional services. However, there is no known research that has explored needs and service utilization among conjugally bereaved baby boomers in Singapore. This pilot study has found the family life cycle a useful theoretical framework to account for needs and service utilization among bereaved spouses. The stress and coping model developed by Lazarus and Folkman, and the dual process model of coping with bereavement developed by Stroebe and Schut are useful conceptual models for a study that aims to explore needs and service utilization among conjugally bereaved individuals.
