Population dynamics of Niger River prawn (Macrobrachium felicinum) in Lower Taylor Creek, Niger Delta, Nigeria

Abstract

The population dynamics of Macrobrachium felicinum (Holthuis, 1949) in Lower Taylor Creek, Niger Delta, Nigeria, was analysed using monthly length-frequency data (June 2008 – May 2010). This study was aimed at determining the status of fishery and establishing the levels of exploitation that will give sustainable yields. The FAO-ICLARM stock assessment tool (FISAT II) software was used to estimate population parameters. The growth parameters obtained from the seasonalised Von Bertalanffy growth function were L∞ = 10.24 cm total length, K/year = 1.40, C = 0.85; and WP = 0.79 (September). Using a length-converted catch curve, total mortality (Z) was estimated at 9.50/year, natural mortality (M) at 3.04/year, while fishing mortality (F) was estimated at 6.46/year. From the probability of capture estimation, the length-at-first capture (Lc ) for M. felicinum was 4.55 cm. One major recruitment peak per year was established for M. felicinum, while the relative yield-per-recruit analysis predicted the maximum exploitation rate (E max) of 0.42 against the current exploitation rate (E) of 0.68, suggesting M. felicinum is being over-fished. The management efforts should therefore be concentrated on regulating the mesh sizes of the traps as a means of reducing the fishing pressure on M. felicinum in Lower Taylor Creek.

Taylor Creek žemupyje (Nigerio upės delta, Nigerija) nuo 2008 metų birželio mėn. iki 2010 metų gegužės mėn. buvo tiriama Macrobrachium felicinum (Holthuis;1949) populiacijos dinamika. Įvertinant populiacijos parametrus;kas mėnesį surinkti krevečių kūno ilgio pasiskirstymo duomenys apdoroti FAO-ICLARM išteklių vertinimo programiniu paketu FISAT II. Pagal Von Bertalanffy augimo formulę nustatyti augimo parametrai: L∞ = 10,24 cm bendro ilgio, K per metus = 1,40, C = 0,85 ir WP = 0,79 (rugsėjo mėn.). Naudojant pagal kūno ilgį sudarytą sugavimų kreivę;nustatytas bendras mirtingumas (Z = 9,50 per metus), natūralus mirtingumas (M = 3,04 per metus) ir mirtingumas dėl žvejybos (F = 6,46 per metus). M. felicinum ilgis pirmo sugavimo metu (Lc ) buvo 4,55 cm. Kasmet M. felicinum būdingas tik vienas sugavimo pikas. Santykinio gausumo ir prieaugio analizė parodė;kad M. felicinum išteklių realusis sugavimas (E = 0,68) viršija maksimalią normą (E max = 0,42), todėl pagrindinė populiacijos valdymo priemonė turėtų būti tinklo akies dydžio reguliavimas, sumažinantis šių krevečių sugavimus Taylor Creek žemupyje.
