Alterations in haematological and biochemical parameters of African catfish Clarias gariepinus exposed to sublethal concentrations of deltamethrin

Abstract

Deltamethrin is a type-II pyrethroid commonly used in agriculture and public health to control insect pests. Sublethal effects of emulsifiable concentration of deltamethrin were evaluated on the African catfish Clarias gariepinus. The haematological and biochemical parameters were evaluated at different concentrations (0.001, 0.005, 0.010 and 0.025 ppm) selected with reference to previously reported 96 h LC₅₀ of 0.299 ppm for juvenile C. gariepinus. Exposure and recovery periods of 60 days each were used with fish blood collected on the 0, 15th, 30th, 45th, and 60th day of exposure and 60th day of recovery. A significant reduction in packed cell volume, red blood cell counts and haemoglobin concentrations were observed, while initial increase in leucocytes (15th day), except at 0.010 ppm was also noted. Exposed fish showed increase in serum glucose (p ≤ 0.05) and cholesterol and reduction in total protein and globulin. The results showed the health risk of non-target organisms exposed to chronic concentration of deltamethrin which could serve as a guide in pesticide toxicity assessment.

Piretroidas deltametrinas dažnai naudojamas vabzdžių kenkėjų kontrolei žemės ūkyje ir visuomenės sveikatos priežiūroje. Buvo įvertintas subletalus koncentruotos deltametrino emulsijos poveikis afrikiniam šamui (Clarias gariepinus). Atsižvelgiant į anksčiau nustatytą 96 val. 0,299 ppm LC₅₀ koncentracijos įtaką Clarias gariepinus jaunikliams, hematologiniai ir biocheminiai parametrai buvo įvertinti naudojant 0,001, 0,005, 0,010 ir 0,025 ppm deltametrino koncentracijas. Žuvų kraujas buvo imamas pirmąją, 15-tą, 30-tą, 45-tą ir 60-tą deltametrino poveikio dieną bei praėjus 60 dienų po poveikio. Nustatytas ženklus hematokrito, raudonųjų kraujo kūnelių skaičiaus ir hemoglobino koncentracijos sumažėjimas bei pradinis (15-tą dieną) leukocitų skaičiaus padidėjimas (išskyrus 0,010 ppm koncentraciją). Patikimai (p ≤ 0,05) padidėjo gliukozės ir cholesterolio kiekis kraujo serume, sumažėjo bendro baltymo ir globulinų koncentracija.
