Notes

Very little was known about this relationship. Gillian Stead Eilersen mentions Guenther in her biography of Head (Bessie Head. Thunder Behind Her Ears: Her Life and Writing), explaining how Guenther’s stories of Nazi Germany made a deep impression on Head (57).

All translations from German into English are my own.

The documents that Chibesakunda donated to the Khama III Memorial Museum in Serowe have been acquisitioned but not yet catalogued. All documents in this collection are referred to here by date, since they do not yet have locator or file numbers.

The autobiographical notes have also been donated to the Khama III Museum, as a separate collection, but the “Schilderung” is included in the collection with the correspondence.

The corresponding page in the first edition is 55.
