SUMMARY

Effect of thermic conditions acting during embryogenesis upon the number and duration of the larval instars of Aeschna mixta [Odon. Aeschnidae]

It has been established that the post-embryonic development of Aeschna mixta may involve 9, 10 or 11 larval instars, each growing type being determined ab ovo. The duration of embryonic development that depends on the temperature to which the eggs are subjected, acts upon the number and the duration of larval instars. A short embryogenesis induces the hatching of bigger larvae which develop by means of a lower number of instars within a rather short time. A long embryogenesis involves the formation of little sized larvulae which develop slowly through a higher number of instars.
