SUMMARY
Observations on the larval parasitism of Hyperechia bomboides
The mimetic robber fly Hyperechia bomboides Loew catches adults of Xylocopa pubescens (Spin.) and X. olivacea F. Its larva is ectoparasitic on larvae and pupae of these carpenter bees. This new observation, made in the field in Sénégal has been confirmed in the laboratory. After feeding on the larvae or pupae, the asilid larva bores its own tunnel which ends under the bark at the nymphal lodge-larva and pupa of the robber fly are described in detail.
A comparative study of best-known mimetic couples Robber fly/Carpenter-bee pointed out the role of mimicry in the genus Hyperechia, specially to egg-laying.
