Summary

Comparative data on the reproductive activity of Canthon indigaceus chevrolati Harold and Canthon cyanellus cyanellus LeConte (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). — The rearing of two species of Canthon, as well as observations under natural conditions has allowed for a comparison of their reproductive activity. The duration of the various phases of reproductive activity (pre-nesting, nesting and post-nesting), breeding pair behavior and postembryonic development are very similar in both species. However during the nesting period, reproductive activity differs notably with respect to the number of nests built, the rhythm of egg laying, and care given to the nest. In spite of these differences, fecundity is similar. Using the results obtained from rearing it is possible to estimate that the reproductive potential of the two species is exhausted in two years under natural conditions during two successive rainy seasons.
