Abstract
Objective: To find the overall association of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and chronic periodontitis (CP) between case and control among the patients with comorbidities like diabetes mellitus, hypertension and obesity.
Design: Case-control study comprising 351 subjects with SSNHL and 1101 controls without SSNHL. Both the case and control groups had the individuals with CP and/or CP with diabetes mellitus, hypertension and obesity.
Results: We have shown the significant association of SSNHL with CP (p < .05; odd ratio 3.565, 95% confidence interval = 2.566–4.953). The comorbidities stratified analysis revealed a significantly higher risk of SSNHL with CP in the presence or absence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and obesity (p < .05).
Conclusion: We found a significant association of SSNHL with CP. Further, we highlighted the exclusive association of SSNHL and CP, even in cases of CP with or without other comorbidities like diabetes mellitus, hypertension and obesity. More studies must be conducted only with cases having SSNHL and CP for these results to be supported.
