Abstract

The hypoglycemic effects of aqueous Annona stenophylla Engl. and Diels root bark and Morus alba L. leaf extracts were evaluated in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Diabetes was induced in 16 mice by administering alloxan intra-peritoneally (120 mg/kg body weight) for 1 week with 4 mice used as a diabetic control. The effects of the 2 plant herbal extracts on blood glucose levels of diabetic mice was determined at 2 h time intervals for 8 hours after intra-peritoneal administration of the plant extract at 100 mg dose/kg body weight. Glibenclamine administered at 0.2 mg/kg b. wt was used as a positive control. The glucose levels of diabetic mice treated with A. stenophylla were progressively and significantly decreased at 2h, 4h and 6h whilst those treated with M. alba showed a marked decrease in blood glucose levels at 6h. The results suggest that the administration of A. stenophylla has a hypoglycemic effect in diabetic mice and its effect is comparable to that of glibenclamide explaining its basis for use to control diabetes in traditional medicine in Zimbabwe.
