Abstract

Sex hormones have been found to play an intimate role with some of the cancers such as the breast-cancer, prostate-cancer, uterine-cancer, etc. The relation between the estrogen and breast-cancer has an important significance. The main aim of the cancer treatment is removal of the primary tumor, spreading of the distant metastases and improving the quality of life of the patient. But as we all know that there is another matter known as drug toxicity which is related with different chemotherapies. The rise of the interest in natural compounds such as the phytoestrogens which will act as adjuvant cancer therapy along with the prevalent conventional chemotherapy. Phytoestrogens are actually a class of compounds that are derived from the plant sources. They have structural similarities with the mammalian estrogen and can act both as estrogen agonist and antagonist. The properties of these compounds are employed for their usage in different purposes such as prevention of cancer, prevention of osteoporosis, improving post-menopausal health condition, etc. As reviewed in this paper from different in-vitro as well as in-vivo studies along with the different ongoing clinical trials it has been found that the phytoestrogens have a role in cell-cycle arrest, inhibition of inflammation, angiogenesis etc.
