Abstract

The genus Curcuma is a huge category of plant kingdom containing several species of rhizomatous herbs belongs to family Zingiberaceae. The objective of the present study was to determine and compare in vitro antidiabetic and antibacterial activities of different species of Curcuma i.e. Curcuma longa, Curcuma caesia, and Curcuma aromatica. The extracts were dried to evaluate in vitro antidiabetic and antimicrobial activities. In vitro antidiabetic was determined by the α-amylase inhibition assay. C. caesia exhibited the highest inhibition (97.72 ± 0.28 %) as compared to the other two species during the in vitro antidiabetic assay. C. aromatica was found to be very potent to inhibit the growth of bacteria. C. aromatica had the highest antimicrobial and C. caesia showed the highest antidiabetic activity in an α-amylase inhibition assay. It can conclude from the study that Curcuma species may serve as an important bioresource for antidiabetic and antibacterial medication.
