Evaluation of the in Vitro Activity of Nifuroxazide Footnote on Enteropathogenic Microorganisms: Determination of Bacteriostatic and Bactericidal Concentrations and Disk Susceptibility

Summary

We have determined the in vitro bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity of nifuroxazide, a non absorbable nitrofuran derivate, on different enteropathogenic microorganisms from human origin. This compound had a good bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity on Campylobacter and Shigella. The activity on Salmonella, E. coli and Yersinia is rather low but not without possible clinical significance. Clinical trials are necessary to demonstrate the clinical usefulness of the compound. Furthermore, a disk diffusion test with nitrofurantoin is unreliable.
