Mesenteric Vein Thrombosis Presenting As A Neurological Problem

Summary

A young woman developed mesenteric vein thrombosis three months after splenectomy. She presented with focal neurological symptoms, which were attributed to cerebral oedema, secondary to her shock state. The incidence, aetiology, diagnosis, management and prognosis of mesenteric vein thrombosis are discussed. The importance of early diagnosis and of aggressive combined medical/surgical management are emphasized.
