The clinical and bacteriological observation of a 37-year-old man with Streptococcus suis capsular type 2 (group R) meningitis is described. Complete cure was obtained with intravenous ampicillin. The epidemiology of S. suis infections in man is reviewed. An occupational exposure to pigs or pork products could not be demonstrated in our patient.
