Modelling of electric vehicle charging station and controlled by fuzzy logic controller with different modes of operation

ABSTRACT

The main objective of implementing charging stations is to ensure the good charging to the Electric Vehicles by using a solar PV array which is interconnected to the battery energy storage systems. The charging station regulates the supply voltage and frequency without the use of a mechanical speed governor. It also assures that energy gained from grid or by the DG set will have the unity power factor (UPF) when the load is nonlinear. Besides this, the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) voltage is synchronised with the grid/generator voltage in order to provide continuous charging. In order to increase the optimal efficiency of the charging stations, the charging stations will perform the active/reactive power transfer from the vehicle to grid, vehicle to house and vehicle to vehicle (V2V) power transfer. The operational experiment of the charging station is simulated and verified by using MATLAB/SIMULINK.

S. C. Vijaya Kumar

S. C. Vijayakumar has completed his ME (Power System Engineering) from the Velammal Engineering College, Chennai. He has received his BE (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) from Ganadipathy Tulsi’s Engineering College, Vellore. He has teaching experience for 10 years and is a research scholar in Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology. His specialised areas in research are power systems, and battery management. He has the credit of having published three research papers in Scopus Indexed Journals and 13 papers in UGC CARE listed, refereed and reviewed journals. Currently, he is working as Assistant Professor in the EEE Department at Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai. He is a life member of ISTE.

K. Karunanithi

K. Karunanithi graduated from the Institution of Engineers (India), Kolkata, in Electrical Engineering in 2005. He obtained his Master of Engineering in Power Systems Engineering in 2009 from Anna University, Tirunelveli. He completed his PhD from Kalasalingam University, Srivilliputur, in 2016. He has more than 20 years of teaching experience at various institutions. He is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology, Avadi, Chennai. He is a life member of ISTE and IE(I) and a member of IET. His research interests include Power system planning, Electric Vehicles, Smart grid and Microgrid.

S. P. Raja

S. P. Raja was born in Sathankulam, Tuticorin District, Tamilnadu, India. He completed his schooling in Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Sathankulam, Tuticorin, Tamilnadu, India. He completed his BTech in Information Technology in 2007 from Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering, Tiruchendur. He completed his ME in Computer Science and Engineering in 2010 from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. He completed his PhD in 2016 in Image processing from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. Currently, he is working as an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Tamilnadu, India. He published 46 papers in International Journals, 24 in International conferences and 12 in national conferences.

S. Ramesh

S. Ramesh received a BE degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Annamalai University in 2003 and an ME degree in Power Systems Engineering from Anna University in 2005. He was awarded a PhD in the faculty of Electrical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, in 2012. He has more than 16 years of teaching experience in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He is a life member of ISTE and Member of IEEE. He has published 20 International Journals and presented articles in 20 international and 40 National level conferences. Currently, he is serving as a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University), Avadi, Chennai. He is the recognised research Supervisor of Anna University and Vel Tech University, with 10 research scholars pursuing PhD under his guidance. His research interests include Soft Computing, Power System Operation & Control, Intelligent Controllers, Electric Vehicles and Smart Grids.

P. Chandrasekar

P. Chandrasekar received a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Pondicherry Engineering College, Pondicherry, in 1997, a Master of Engineering in Power Systems Engineering from College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, Chennai, in 2002 and a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, in 2013. He has got a total teaching experience of about 22 years. He has published 35 research papers in various journals and conferences at the National and International levels. H index of 4. Five PhD students are awarded degrees are under his supervision.

R. Obulupathy

R. Obulupathy is an MTech student (Power Electronics and Drives) at Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of science and technology. He has received a BTech (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) from N.B.K.R Institute of science and technology, Vidyanagar. His areas of interest is in Power electronics and drives.
