Preserving attribute value differences of neighboring regions in classified choropleth maps

ABSTRACT

Beyond many other map-reading tasks by using choropleth maps, the visual detection and comparison of attribute value differences of neighboring polygons are of major interest. These tasks are supported not only through an appropriate color scheme, but also through a suitable data classification. However, common classification methods perform a division into intervals only along the number line, with that ignoring the required spatial context. This is our motivation to present a new measure, the Edge Preservation Index. First examinations proved the logical behavior and desired expressiveness of this index, both numerically (in comparison with a different index in use, the Boundary Accuracy Index) and visually (showing a significant increase in edge information).

RÉSUMÉ

Parmi les nombreuses tâches de lecture cartographique à partir de cartes choroplethes, la détection et la comparaison des différences de valeurs attributaires entre polygones voisins est une tâche particulièrement importante. Cette tâche est assurée non seulement par un jeu de couleurs approprié mais aussi grâce à une classification des données adaptée. Pourtant les méthodes de classification classiques réalisent une séparation en intervalles uniquement le long d’une ligne numérique en ignorant ainsi les besoins liés au contexte spatial. Pour remédier à ce problème, nous souhaitons proposer une nouvelle mesure, l’indice de préservation des bords (EPI). Les premières expérimentations prouvent le comportement logique et la bonne expressivité de cet indice, autant sur un plan numérique (en comparaison avec un autre indice utilisé, l’indice de précision des frontières) et visuellement (en montrant un net accroissement des informations en bord de polygones).
