Abstract
Reset Modernity! is the latest of three exhibitions organized by Bruno Latour and his team that make use of the expressive potential of artwork to translate his thinking and present it to audiences far beyond academia. It is an extraordinarily ambitious endeavor, permanently oscillating among the three domains of science, arts, and politics, but always firmly rooted in a problematization of any form of representation. No wonder the work of geography, a discipline that has long paid homage to what Latour calls the “devil of Double-Click” (the naive belief in one-to-one representation) by surveying, mapping, and measuring the world, figures prominently here. This review essay elaborates on how Reset Modernity! relates to Latour’s latest project, An Inquiry into Modes of Existence (AIME) and uses three pieces of the artwork shown at the exhibition for illustration. Yet in its very form (a text, a scientific journal) it inevitably runs counter to one of the central claims of AIME: that of abandoning the privileged position of scientific texts for the production of truth, breaking science’s monopoly on truth speaking, and paving the way for a plurality of veridictions.

¡Restauren la modernidad! es la última de tres exhibiciones organizadas por Bruno Latour y su equipo que hacen uso del expresivo potencial de las obras de arte para traducir su modo de pensar y presentarlo a audiencias bien alejadas de la academia. Se trata de un empeño extraordinariamente ambicioso que de manera permanente oscila entre los tres dominios de la ciencia, las artes y la política, pero que siempre está arraigado con firmeza en una problematización de cualquier forma de representación. No en balde el trabajo de la geografía ––disciplina que desde siempre ha rendido homenaje a lo que Latour llama el “demonio del Doble-Clic” (la ingenua creencia en la representación uno a uno)–– haciendo el levantamiento topográfico, cartografiando y midiendo el mundo, figura aquí de manera prominente. Este ensayo de revisión se extiende en la consideración sobre cómo está relacionada ¡Restauren la modernidad! con el último proyecto de Latour, Una Indagación sobre los Modos de Existencia (AIME, acrónimo original en inglés), y usa a manera de ilustración tres piezas de las obras de arte mostradas en la exhibición. No obstante, en su propia forma (un texto, una revista científica) se mueve inevitablemente en contra de una de las posturas centrales de la AIME: la de abandonar la posición privilegiada de los textos científicos para la producción de la verdad, rompiendo el monopolio de la ciencia de hablar la verdad y allanando el camino para una pluralidad de veridicciones.
