Microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of metastable beta titanium alloy Ti–5Al–3.5Mo–7.2V–3Cr

ABSTRACT

The work describes a correlation among microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of a metastable β titanium alloy Ti–5Al–3.5Mo–7.2V–3Cr (A2). The alloy A2 portrays the presence of β and ω phases in the βsolution treated and water quenched (βSTWQ)condition. The ageing of βSTWQ samples has been carried out in single and two steps. The aged samples show grain boundary α, islands α, sub boundary α and uniform distribution of α within β phase.

The β phase texture has strengthened from 550 to 750 °C samples in two-step aged samples. The α phase texture is strengthened and weakened from 550 to 750 °C in single- and two-step ageing, respectively. The Vickers hardness values of the alloy A2 aged at 300 °C are significantly larger than the βSTWQ sample due to precipitation hardening. Ageing temperature has marked influence on hardness values in single and two step aged samples. The alloy aged at 550 °C exhibits high strength and low elongation values than those of the βSTWQ and 750 °C aged samples in single-step ageing. The strength and elongation values of the alloy in two-step ageing are relatively higher than the alloy aged in 750 °C in single-step.
