ABSTRACT

The heterogeneous socio-demographic composition of, and social interaction in, poverty-stricken urban neighbourhoods in China is comparatively less understood. Drawing upon a large-scale household survey of dilapidated old city neighbourhoods, declining workers’ villages, inner-urban villages and peri-urban villages, this paper identifies contrasts and similarities in the demographic and socio-economic characteristics and the patterns of neighbourhood interaction in 25 poor neighbourhoods in six large Chinese cities. These results demonstrate the importance of neighbourhood and neighbouring in enabling disadvantaged groups to negotiate their rights to inhabit and thrive in the city.

Area Development and Policy.

Area Development and Policy.

Area Development and Policy.
