ABSTRACT
Introduction: Genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes, including those with an increased risk for pancreatic cancer, has become more routine for patients and families with a personal and/or family history of cancer. Genetics professionals, including genetic counselors and medical geneticists, are specially trained to elicit and assess personal and family history, and to discuss appropriate genetic testing options and genetic test results with patients and families.
Areas covered: The purpose of this article is to review hereditary cancer syndromes associated with an increased risk for pancreatic cancer, available genetic testing options, and pancreatic cancer screening modalities.
Expert commentary: With recent advances in genetic testing methodologies, clinical and research genetic testing options, and the increased identification of somatic and germline variants in genes associated with hereditary cancer syndromes, the role of the genetic counselor in the multi-disciplinary oncology team is expanding and significant.
