ABSTRACT
In the present study, 18 species from tribe Hyoscyameae (Solanaceae) representing all morphological sections were analyzed using sequences of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region and the plastid psbA-trnH, ndhF, and trnL-F markers. Our analyses undoubtedly demonstrated a sister group relationship between Archihyoscyamus A.M.Lu and Hyoscyamus L. The affinities with Hyoscyamus indicated by these analyses have been previously suggested based on morphological characters. Considering its uniqueness in a few characters (e.g. cushion form, high number of druse crystals in the leaf mesophyll, and seed morphological characters), we recognize Archihyoscyamus as a monotypic genus of Hyoscyameae. Our analyses indicated that all of the five genera and monophyletic and Atropa L. is basal.
