Back to the future—IIE Transactions 1988

Abstract

The IIE Transactions began publishing focused issues in 1992. This article reviews the history and decision-making which led to this expansion. In addition, this article includes two recommendations for possible expansion of IISE Transactions.

Allen L. Soyster

Dr. Allen L. Soyster is the former Dean of Engineering and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University. He earned a BS in industrial engineering from Pennsylvania State University, an MS in industrial engineering and operations research from Cornell University, and a PhD in operations research from Carnegie Mellon University. From 1981 to 1996, he was professor and head of the Industrial Engineering Department at Pennsylvania State University, where he was administrator of the Manufacturing Engineering Education Partnership and was responsible for assembling the faculty, staff and Industry Advisory Board for the Learning Factory. In 2006, the Learning Factory was awarded the National Academy of Engineering Award for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education. Dr. Soyster is the author or coauthor of more than 85 refereed journal articles published in IIE Transactions, Operations Research, Management Science, Naval Research Logistics, and other journals. The focus of his work is on production and manufacturing systems; mathematical programming and optimization; and transportation, natural resources, and energy. Dr. Soyster was named a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) in 1988 and a Fellow of the World Confederation of Productivity Science in 1997. He was honored with the 1992 IIE Award for Technical Innovation, the 1993 Penn State Award for Outstanding Faculty Mentoring, the 1994 Albert Holzman Outstanding IIE Educator Award. In 2013 he received the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Lifetime Achievement Award, the most esteemed honor bestowed by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. Dr. Soyster was the sixth EIC of IISE Transactions serving the term of 1989-1992.
