Serving LGBTQ+ Clients Formerly or Currently Involved in the Foster Care System: Counseling Strategies and Interventions

Abstract

A recent content analysis of professional counseling journals revealed a lack of focus on foster care populations, notably including the intersectionality of foster care youth who also identify as LGBTQ+. Expanding this analysis to a larger scope of professional journals (e.g., social work, medical, psychology, sociology) provides a broader spectrum of the current needs of this population. Synthesizing information across professions allows professional and school counselors to expand their understanding of ways to understand, assist, and advocate for LGBTQ+ foster care youth, their adoptive families, and helping professionals.
