The 'Second Call': Faculty renewal and recommitment at midlife

Many higher education systems are staffed by an ageing teaching force, and the implications for quality in the present and the medium term have been insufficiently appreciated. A study of 20 midlife teaching staff in one Canadian university suggests that, while this can be a time of stagnation, it can also be the time of a second call to commit to working in higher education. However, if that possibility is to be realised, there are implications for the ways in which higher education institutions operate.
