Statistical Accuracy in Stellar Speckle Interferometry at Low Light Levels

Pages 885-905 | Published online: 14 Nov 2010

Abstract

An expression for the statistical accuracy of a measurement of the angular diameter of a faint astronomical object, made using the speckle technique combined with a least squares fitting procedure, is derived. The expression is used to find optimum values for the exposure time, filter bandwidth and detector cell size. The dependence of the accuracy on object and telescope size is shown and limiting magnitudes are given.
