Geometrical Optics in Weakly Anisotropic Media

Abstract

The propagation of polarized waves in weakly anisotropic media is considered. The geometric optics approximation is used and the ray paths are determined in the approximation that the medium is isotropic. The transport of polarized waves along these rays is described by the first-order approximation; this yields a system of two coupled ordinary differential equations. The effects of birefringence, dispersion and diffraction are given by the second-order approximation.
