Is German Direct Investment a Substitute for Domestic Investment?

Pages 125-146 | Published online: 08 Sep 2010

Abstract

This article seeks to explore the validity of arguments developed by 'institutionalists', such as Hall and Soskice, by examining investments made by German companies both at home and abroad in quantitative as well as qualitative ways. The evidence - drawn from the car and electrical equipment industries - suggests that Hall and Soskice might be correct in advancing a theory of 'comparative institutional advantage'.
