Women, conflict, and culture in former Yugoslavia

Pages 36-41 | Published online: 02 Jul 2010

Abstract

Conflict signals a shock to the social order; violence against women escalates in the absence of cultural controls, and may be used as a weapon of war, and as a propaganda tool. This article examines these issues in the context of former Yugoslavia, and discusses women's resistance to nationalist agendas.
