Gender and rural-urban migration in China

Pages 24-30 | Published online: 01 Jul 2010

Abstract

Migration by both men and women in search of better economic opportunities is currently taking place on a massive scale in China. Young women who return to live in their home villages after several years of earning high wages in urban areas may face particular problems of adjustment. This article considers the effect this 'circular migration' is having on gender relations within Chinese society.
