Rural women, development, and telecommunications: A pilot programme in South Africa

Pages 64-70 | Published online: 01 Jul 2010

Abstract

Telecentres- places where people can pay for the use of devices such as telephones, fax machines, and computers- are currently opening throughout Africa. They are seen as providing a much needed communications infrastructure to a continent poorly supplied by telecomunication facilities (Acacia 1997). Heather Schreiner outlines the obstacles to rural women gaining from this technology.
