Neutralizing the Narcissistic Style:

Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Self-Psychology and Occupational Therapy

Pages 135-156 | Published online: 03 Aug 2009

Abstract

The diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder has become more prevalent in psychiatric settings over the last decade. Contemporary psychological literature has addressed this disorder, yet the occupational therapy literature has not. The author contends that occupational therapy provides relevant treatment for those with this syndrome. The article describes: (1) clinical features of the disorder, (2) current psychological theory and approach useful for treatment, (3) why and how occupational therapy is a unique, natural medium for treatment, and (4) an occupational therapy program tailored to the needs of those with narcissistic character disorder.
