Factors Affecting Psychosexual Development of Adults with Congenital Physical Disabilities

Abstract

Twenty-six adults with congenital physical disabilities were interviewed to gather information regarding self-concept, the roles of family, peers, educators and health care providers in development of sexual identity, sources of sexual information, and prevalence of sexual abuse. A variety of relationships and their influence upon the development of self-esteem and a positive sexual identity are described in the results. Specific areas of concern for therapist and possible intervention strategies are discussed.
