Abstract

This paper provides an understanding of the nature of hearing loss in the elderly. A brief discussion of the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the auditory system is followed by a description of the type of assessment required in order to develop a treatment program. Rehabilitation strategies center around procuring and adjusting to a hearing aid. Audiologic habilitation considerations are discussed which include hearing aid services, speech-reading, auditory training, sensory aids, and listener-speaker strategies. The references and resources listed will provide the reader with desired additional information.
