Abstract
Service-learning experiences have been implemented in occupational therapy curriculums for a variety of purposes directed toward students' understanding the aging population. However, few studies have examined how the students' attitudes are affected by the service-learning experience. Sixty-eight occupational therapy students in a required geriatrics course engaged in service learning with elders. They were given a pre- and posttest and participated in focus groups to measure attitudes. Their attitudes prior to and after the experience demonstrated little change. The experiences seemed to change their perceptions from an idealistic outlook to a more realistic one, which may better prepare them for practice.
