ABSTRACT

The chemical modification of acetylacetone in graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry for the determination of Al was explored in this paper. The effect of acetylacetone on the ashing, vaporizing and the signal profile of analyte was studied, and the atomization mechanism of Al in graphite furnace in the presence of acetylacetone was discussed briefly. The results showed that the sensitivity for Al determination by GFAAS could be improved with the use of acetylacetone as chemical modifier, and the detection limit of Al approached 1.5 pg. Under the optimum parameters, the proposed method was applied to determine Al in standard human hair reference materials, and the results agreed with the certified values.
