The Properties of Sodium Naphthalene Sulfonate in Lowering Interfacial Tension and its Possibility of Application in EOR

Abstract

Sodium naphthalene sulfonate (SNS) and methyl naphthalene sulfonate (SMNS) were studied for their interfacial tension under different conditions. It was found that even though it has no soft alkyl chain, SNS displays good activity in lowering the IFT of SNS/alkali/crude oil. When it is mixed with a small amount of other surfactants properly, the activity can be strengthened. These properties make it possible to apply SNS in EOR. Furthermore, the results show it is possible that the rigid aromatic ring can play the role of a hydrophobic group.
