Surface properties OF biaxially stretched PP and PE modified by corona treatment

Abstract

This work is aimed at investigating energetic parameters of polyethylene and polypropylene surfaces under mechanical influence, during high temperature annealing and after corona-and oxygen-glow discharge treatment, and to find the influence of biaxial orientation on surface properties of polyolefines.

It is shown that the surface energy of the processing samples, treated and not treated with corona, at different rates of stretching depends not only on temperature and degree of biaxial orientation, but also on contact of the surface with polar and nonpolar media.

Treatment with corona discharge brings to emergence of oxygen-containing groups that do not vanish during temperature annealing; they simply re-direct from the surface into the bulk, remaining in the surface layer.
