Abstract

Phenylhydrazine complexes of metal(II) phthalates of the general formula [M(C8H4O4)(C6H5NHNH2)2(H2O)2], where M=Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) or Cd(II), were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic and spectral studies. The thermal decomposition behavior of the cobalt(II) complex was studied and the kinetic parameters for the decomposition reactions were evaluated according to the Coats‐Redfern, Horowitz‐Metzger and MacCallum‐Tanner methods. Slightly distorted octahedral geometries were established for the complexes with water molecules in the coordination sphere. The monodentate behavior of phenylhydrazine molecule was established. The thermal decomposition pattern of the cobalt(II) complex was characteristic of the proposed structure. Biotoxic studies revealed marked antifungal and antibacterial effects for several complexes.
