Acknowledgments
Ms. Jocelyn K. Wilk, Assistant Archivist at the University Archives and Columbiana Library at Columbia University, made the materials in this regard available to me whenever I made a request. The two photos in Fig. and the photos of the two personnel cards in Fig. were kindly sent to me by Ms. Wilk. For these and other assistance with archival queries, especially in the context of Section 2, I am deeply indebted to her. I gathered Wald's last available photo (Fig. ) from the Photography Archives of the Indian Statistical Institute's Library in Calcutta during my visit to the Institute in 1999. I am grateful to Professor S. B. Rao, the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, and I thank him for giving me the permission to use the photo. I remain thankful to Milton Sobel for sharing the photo of Abraham, Lucille, and Robert Wald (Fig. ).
