Star Use by Fishermen in Oman

Abstract

Ethnographic information collected by the authors on former star use along the Arabian Sea coast of Oman is presented and discussed. Although the stars were not observed directly, some were identified from detailed descriptions and astronomy software. Many are associated with winds warning of danger at sea, a few to tell the direction, and others to note productive fishing periods. Not all stars in the full‐year calendars prepared by others had practical applications. To clarify the issues raised, it will be necessary to spend more time in the fishing settlements, where possible watching stars with people who still remember them.

La utilización de las estrellas entre los pescadores de omán

El artículo presenta información etnográfica colectada por los autores sobre la utilización de las estrellas, por parte de los pescadores de la costa de Omán en el Mar Arábigo. Aunque las estrellas no fueron observadas directamente, algunas fueron identificadas a partir de descripciones detalladas y la utilización de software de astronomía. Muchas estrellas son asociadas a la advertencia de vientos o peligros en el mar, algunas pocas son empleadas como indicadores de dirección y otras como señales de periodos productivos de pesca. No todas las estrellas de los calendarios del año completo elaborados por otros investigadores, tienen aplicaciones prácticas. Para clarificar este asunto, será necesario pasar más tiempo en los asentamientos pesqueros, en dónde es posible observar las estrellas con personas que aún recuerdan su significado.

المعلومات الاثنوقرافية التي تم جمعها من قِبل المؤلفين حول الاستخدام القديم للنجوم على طول ساحل بحر العرب في عمان سوف يتم عرضها و مناقشتها في هذه المقالة. على الرغم من أن عملية مراقبة النجوم لم تكن مباشرة (أي: لم تلاحظ بالعين المجردة) إلا أن بعضها حُدِّد إما عن طريق الوصف الدقيق من قِبل بعض كبار السن في المنطقة وإما بواسطة البرامج الحاسوبية. ترتبط حركة كثير من النجوم بحركة الرياح محذرة من وقوع خطر في البحر، بينما قليل منها يدل على الاتجاهات، في حين أن بعضها يساعد على معرفة أوقات صيد الأسماك النشطة. ليس لكل النجوم في التقاويم التي أعدها الآخرون تطبيقات عملية. لكي نحصل على صورة واضحة حول ما ذُكر أعلاه، فإنه من الضروري قضاء وقت أطول في مواطن صيد الأسماك ومشاهدة النجوم مع أصحاب التجربة الذين لا يزالون يتذكرونها.
