A Further Proposal for the Hull Lines of the Madrague de Giens Ship (c.70 BC)

Pages 443-459 | Received 13 Jul 2018, Accepted 13 Jul 2018, Published online: 15 Apr 2021

Abstract

A review of studies carried out since 1978 on the Madrague de Giens ship remains have enabled a reassessment of the vessel's shell‐first construction process. Hypotheses concerning moulding criteria are developed, with the profile (sheer plan), main cross section (body plan), and active sections and reference planks used to mould the hulll proposed and evaluated. These are compared to the Marsala (3rd century BC), and Yassıada 2 (4th century AD) ships, which have similar wine‐glass‐shaped bottoms. Some aspects of these moulding criteria appear common to those used in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Abstracto

First of all, I thank P. Pomey for his precious help and advice and F. Hocker for his comments. Many thanks to M. Frazzitta of Marsala, for the new surveys of the structures of the Punic ship. My friends M. Di Donato and the late M. D'Amico, boatbuilders in Torre del Greco (Naples) and in Trapani, shared their experience with moulding with the traditional garbi used in their yards and helped me to recognize the nature and the need for bending and tapering the planking strakes, for both shell‐first and skeleton‐first building techniques.
