On the Flexibility of Indian Ocean Sewn‐Plank Vessels: the structural performance of Jewel of Muscat

Pages 335-341 | Received 23 Aug 2019, Published online: 21 Oct 2021

Abstract

Some descriptions of the structural characteristics of Indian Ocean sewn‐plank ships, historical and ethnographic, are compared. The relatively recent idea that sewn‐plank vessels are ‘elastic’ or flexible is considered and, where apposite, is shown to be inherent in aspects of the design other than the sewn planks. J.F. Coates’ engineering analysis of sewn‐plank construction is reviewed and applied to the structural performance of the sewn‐plank replica sailing vessel Jewel of Muscat, designed by the author.

1. There are many editions of Henry Yule's translation of Marco Polo, and editions with additional notes by Henri Cordier, several available online without page numbering, for which reason volume and chapter citation are more useful here. The same is true for Ibn Battuta.
