Notes
1 ‘Vernacular boatbuilding has always been an outdoor activity. Only recently some of the larger traditional boatbuilding operations use an overhead covering, mostly in the form of a sheet metal roof to shade workers from the sun. The sides of such structures are completely open to facilitate building and natural ventilation. There is no advantage to building a boat in the cramped space of a boathouse or shed, but one needs ample open space around the boat being built to easily maneuver large timbers and boards for planking. Also, an open environment provides ventilation to dry the wood during construction so that they do not shrink excessively after fitting and affixing them in place on the ship, otherwise they may distort and crack extensively, requiring replacement.’ (pers. com. of Cemal Pulak of 23/6/2020).
